Missoula has a goal of planting 1,000 new trees per year. The traditional planting stock options, bare root, container and balled and burlap all have limitations in a dry, mountain climate. In each of these options, the majority of the root system is left in the field. Small scale gravel bed tests indicate that trees can be grown for both Spring and Fall planting cycles. Tree survival rates are comparable to other tree stock options. The main benefit of the gravel bed nursery stock is a fibrous root system ready to knit into the soil. Secondary benefits include less tare weight and ease of planting. This yields more trees at a lower cost.
